SCHOOLS from Singapore and Thailand will add international flavour to the BJSS International Combined Events championship at the National Sports Council (NSC) Training Centre in Bukit Jalil this weekend.

Championship co-ordinator S. Entheran said four foreign schools — one from Singapore and three from Thailand — had accepted their invitation to be part of the championship.

The schools are Singapore Sports School, Ubon Ratchathani Sports School, Nakhon Sawan Sports School and Nakhon Sithammarat Sports School.

“We had also invited schools from Australia but they were unable to come due to other commitments. But we are still pleased,” he said.

The teams from Malaysia are Bukit Jalil Sports School, Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sports School, Pahang Sports School, Sabah Sports School, SMK Tun Hussein Onn, SMK Tabuan Jaya and SMK Datuk Peter Mojutin.

Entheran said the championship was unique as it was created for the 13- and 14-year-old age group for both boys and girls.

Participants in the 13-year-old age group will take part in five events — 80m hurdles, long jump, 800m, shot put and high jump — while those in the 14-year-old category have six events — 100m, 100m hurdles, 800m, long jump, high jump and shot put — in the two-day championship.

To add more excitment to the championship, the organisers have included a medley relay.

Entheran said the championship, held for the fifth season, aimed to expose the junior athletes to a competitive environment.

“There is a lack of competition for athletes in this age group. So this championship will provide a platform for the participants as well as the coach to evaluate themselves.

“We have seen athletes from previous championships representing their countries in age group competitions,” Entheran said.

The championship is supported by Milo and the Educational Ministry and Nestle Products sports marketing manager Ng Ping Loong said they were pleased to be associated with the programme.

“The programme has been organised without fail for the past four years. It is an exciting affair as the young athletes strive for their personal best.

“It is also an excellent opportunity for our juniors to gain exposure against their counterparts from Thailand and Singapore.

“We will continue to support this programme,” Ping Loong said.

BJSS will also organise a childrens’ athletics demonstration programme for children aged from nine to 11 and the events will include hurdles, long jump and relay.

Teams, with six children — four boys and two girls — will be formed to take part in all three events. This programme aims to introduce the children to the basics in athletics.
