THE Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) has decided to initiate athletics programmes for children.

BJSS, with Datuk Marina Chin at the helm, has launched a pilot programme called Kids’ Athletics during the International Combined Events championships at the National Sports Council (NSC) training centre in Bukit Jalil recently.

The athletics coaches from BJSS had drawn up a circuit training programme for children aged below eight. They also invited about 25 children to take part in the programme. All participants, guided by the coaches, had to go through the various events — sprints and hurdles, forward squat jumps, javelin and slalom course — during the hour-long programme.

Marina said the programme was to introduce the various events in athletics to children.

“The children had a wonderful time and they were enthusiastic. We are teaching them the basics in athletics. We received encouraging feedback. We are looking at the possibility of having a weekly programme.

“The programme will be at the NSC training centre. The children will have the opportunity to go through a more organised programme. Eventually we would like to see them active in athletics,’’ said Marina.

Former national hurdler Ithnin Mahadi, a teacher at BJSS, said the coaches would be present at the coaching sessions.

“We also have plans to get the athletes from BJSS to assist the coaches. Our vision is to introduce the students to be part of the programme. The students can also be mentors to the young children,’’ said Ithnin.

The coaches, Marina said, were also expected to come out with a structured training programme as well as a manual.

“The manual can be distributed and the programme can be initiated in other parts of the country,’’ she added.

THE foreign teams have praised the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) for organising the International Combined Events (ICE) championships.

The two-day championships was held at the National Sports Council (NSC) Training Centre in Bukit Jalil recently.

The foreign teams were Singapore Sports School and Ubonratchathani Sports School from Thailand.

The local teams were BJSS, Tengku Mahkota Ismail Sports School, Pahang Sports School, SMK Tun Hussein Onn and SMK Tabuan Jaya.

Singapore Sports School coach Raif Iwan said they were taking part in the championships for the third year.

“The championships was an excellent platform for us to gauge our athletes progress. They also get the chance to compete against their counterpart from Malaysia and Thailand. Almost all our athletes won medals. In fact we are happy with our athletes’ performance. We are looking forward to next year’s championships,’’ said Raif.

Ubonratchathani Sports School assistant manager Sathapon Panick was impressed with the organisation of the championships.

“This is the first time we are participating in the championships. It was a well planned championships. It was a wonderful experience for our young athletes. We hope to be invited again for next year’s championships,’’ said Sathapon.

The championships, catering for 13 and 14-year-old boys and girls, was unique. The 13-year-old athletes took part in pentathlon — 80m hurdles, long jump, 800m, shot put and high jump — while the 14-year-old students in hexathlon — 100m, 100m hurdles, 800m, long jump, high jump and shot putt .

BJSS principal Datuk Marina Chin, who had initiated the programme three years ago, was pleased with the encouraging response from participating teams.

“There is a vast improvement and the gap among the participating teams has narrowed. It is a good sign. Most of the athletes will be taking part in the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) championships next year,’’ said Marina.

Education Ministry sports division director Ee Hong, who gave away the prizes, praised BJSS for organising the championships during the school holidays. “The championships will keep the students active. We are impressed with the athletes’ performance,’’ said Ee Hong.
